The concept of website is pretty simple . Network is generated by means of internet protocol address, each and every website is saved with this address and it goes like 192.0.0.1 since it is impossible for human to remember all those numbers every time they wish to access the sites . So that Domain naming service was brought in. Using this service the numbers were replaced with the concept of domains. it starts with world wide web separated by a dot symbol and  user defined name which is unique for each extension. The extensions are available according to website type and geographic location that is wished by the user. There are many like .com , .net, where .com stands for commercial purpose and .net serves for network purpose. According to the geographic location .in,.us can be registered too, .us stands for United States of America and .in is for Indian websites. DNS has been authorized by international community and now website is turning in to some hot revenue generating machine. There are many developments in the internet community that are still on the the research once it reaches the general public it will be more easy and quicker to create and maintain websites. Internet Protocol version six is also on the way which would enable to generate more address for further use.
